Young Leadership Academy
3 Oct 2018
Secondary school students joined army personnel at Sandhurst Royal Training Academy for a day of expert leadership training as part of Reed in Partnership’s Young Careers service.
The students aged 14-18, attended and worked with over 30 facilitators on various development workshops as part of the Academy’s annual Leadership Forum
Students joined soldiers and veterans for a variety of tasks, including leading fellow students through an obstacle course, directing the marching band and rescuing a stranded vehicle to expedition planning. Other organisations sharing their leadership skills on the day included the London Fire Brigade, Army Women’s Rugby and The British Exploring Society.
Our Young Careers team works with senior leadership teams in secondary schools and further education colleges to help design high quality careers guidance support for students.
One student taking part, Alvin, explained:
“Today I’ve learnt that if you’re really, really bad at school, later on in life you can turn your life around and get back on track. My favourite part of today was learning how to make changes every day to become a leader.”
Young Careers, co-financed by the ESF, works with senior staff at participating secondary schools to try out different employer-based activities for students, help teachers to understand London’s job opportunities and support students into work placements and internships.
Ebeneze, pictured with his teacher, during the Leadership Forum said:
“Today I have learnt that being a leader really has an impact on people’s lives every day. There are many attributes important to being a leader, like being adaptable to other people’s opinions and values. It’s also about spreading your own values in a positive light.”
