A three-lane superhighway into work
We’re pleased to introduce our latest report, 'A three lane superhighway into work', which explores how to improve young people's journey from education into employment and address the concerning rise in the number of them who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). The paper is our contribution to the Department of Work and Pensions' review, led by Alan Milburn, into the subject.
Today, young people typically move into employment through one of three main routes - university, apprenticeships or direct entry into the labour market. While these pathways exist, they aren’t equally structured or equally accessible. For those not taking the university route, options can be disjointed and difficult to navigate, with limited safety nets when plans change or setbacks occur. This is where young people can be most vulnerable to becoming disengaged from work or learning altogether.
Our report sets out practical ways to strengthen these routes and connect them more coherently, an essential step if the UK is to reduce economic inactivity and support sustainable economic growth.
Ultimately, our aim is to contribute to a wider conversation about building a system that gives every young person a clear, supported route into meaningful and lasting work.
